Don’t Be Afraid of Watercolor. First Impressions of White Nights Watercolors

I mainly paint in an expressive, naive style with acrylics, and occasionally with oils, but I wondered how to paint in this style with watercolors. Eventually, I found an approach I enjoy that brings me a lot of joy.

I have several sets of watercolors from different manufacturers. Although they have a lot in common, they also differ in many ways.

I received watercolors from the Russian company White Nights from Maliarskeplatno.sk, where I regularly shop for art supplies. The set was the Landscape set, a set of watercolors in nature-inspired shades.

The Russian School of Painting Is World-Famous

The paints made in St.Petersburg are world-famous, too. First, I want to make it clear that my opinion isn’t influenced by the fact that I received the paints. The most distinctive feature of these paints is how beautifully they blend and diffuse. When you paint on a wet surface, they create lovely, delicate patterns along the edges, as you can see in the paintings shown here.

When mixed, they create beautiful shades. Even after drying on watercolor, the paints are brighter than average and very delicate. This may bother some people, but I like it. You can use them to apply very thin, transparent washes, but they also provide quite good coverage when needed.

The range of paints in the landscape set I mentioned earlier is more than sufficient. You can mix everything you need on the handy fold-out palette. I appreciated a small practical detail: the palette can be removed and washed when there is too much paint on it.

Another advantage is that the set has empty spaces where you can add shades you might be missing, though I don't think that's necessary. It's also nice that you can buy the paints individually, choosing the ones you use most.

Summary

I have to say honestly that the watercolors from this manufacturer really pleasantly surprised me, and I have nothing to fault them for. They're ideal for my painting style, and I definitely recommend giving them a try.

How I Paint with Watercolor

I really don't feel qualified to give you advice. I'll just share a few principles I follow when painting with watercolor.

Paper I use comes in different textures. I attach it while damp to a hardboard panel with regular masking tape.....

First, I make a drawing with a pencil.....

I use masking fluid because I paint areas wet and let the paint spread. For example, I mask out the figure and plant details....

For wet-on-wet, I cover the areas, starting with the lightest tones....

I remove the masking and gradually start working on the details on the dry paper.....

Finally, I emphasize the outlines.....

On the finished painting, I write my name and the title in pencil....

That's all for today. If you enjoyed my work, you can find more on my website at www.insit-art-ekkert.sk. www.insit-art-ekkert.sk.
